Maharashtra health minister orders action against 10 officers: The wider industry impact

Nashik : State public health minister Prakash Abitkar has directed strict action against 10 officials, staffers and contractors in Nashik and Dhule districts after surprise inspections revealed multiple lapses in the functioning of govt healthcare facilities.

During visits to hospitals, primary health centres and other healthcare institutions on Aug 21 and 22, Abitkar expressed displeasure over unhygienic conditions, negligence in patient care and administrative shortcomings. “Benefits of govt welfare schemes must reach the last person in need, and inconvenience to patients, delays in treatment or any negligence in healthcare administration will absolutely not be tolerated,” he said. Among the irregularities flagged were poor sanitation at hospitals in Dhule and Malegaon, failure of health officials to orient Jan Arogya committee members about their responsibilities, non-compliance with guidelines and irregular committee meetings. One health officer was also held responsible for failing to take effective action against quacks operating in the jurisdiction. The minister ordered action against medical officials and staff at a primary health centre for alleged dereliction of duty, operational irregularities and negligence in patient care. Senior district health officials in Nashik also came under scrutiny over alleged irregularities in the implementation of Jan Kalyan committees, delayed salaries for outsourced staff and deficiencies in medicine supply and laboratory testing services at some hospitals.
