A Special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) Court in Thane has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the midnight rape and robbery of a migrant woman in her home in 2022. The man, who has 16 prior cases against him, received the maximum penalty for his crimes. His 18-year-old accomplice was sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment for abducting the woman’s husband to enable the assault. In addition to the prison sentences, the court imposed a collective fine of Rs 30.4 lakh on both individuals.
Court Convicts Key Figure in Organised Crime Case
Nishant Mishra, also known as Monu Raider, has been named in 16 chargesheets related to serious crimes including murder, dacoity (armed robbery), and extortion. Recently, a court found him guilty under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), which is designed to combat organised crime. As part of the ruling, legal authorities have been instructed to provide rehabilitation compensation to the survivor of his crimes.
In a separate incident, Mishra was reported to have ransacked a victim’s room before fleeing at dawn, taking Rs 1,000 that was stored in an aluminium container. The victims reported the matter to their landlady the following morning, who then assisted them in approaching the police to file a complaint.
During the trial, the prosecution examined 13 witnesses, including medical officers from Sir J.J. Hospital whose findings of teeth bite contusions and physical struggle corroborated the victim’s unshaken testimony.
