Civic officials said the project will help ease traffic congestion in the area and improve connectivity between Yari Road, Versova, Lokhandwala and adjoining neighbourhoods. The bridge is being constructed to facilitate the development of an 18.3-metre-wide Development Plan road on either side of Kavthe Creek. The project comprises a 110-metre main bridge and approach roads measuring 40 metres on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar side and 56 metres near Amarnath Tower. The bridge will be 11 metres wide. The main structure will have a 110-metre single-span steel basket-handle arch, with tension rods connecting the arch to the bridge deck. BMC estimates that a journey currently taking around 30 minutes could be reduced to about 10 minutes once the bridge is opened to traffic.
Once completed, it will provide a direct link between Yari Road, Panch Marg and Versova and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar, Lokhandwala Complex and Samarth Nagar. The foundation work comprises reinforced cement concrete pile foundations, while RCC abutment walls and caps will form the supporting structure. The new link is expected to significantly shorten travel between parts of Versova, Yari Road and Lokhandwala. The bridge is also expected to become an alternative east-west route after proposed Versova-Bandra Sea Link and the northern extension of Mumbai Coastal Road become operational.
