As per residents, they could draw water from the well for gardening and other household needs till 2010. Nagpur: While the city is bracing for possible water cuts due to below-normal rainfall, a decades-old water-filled well in Sahakar Nagar remains abandoned, littered with dried leaves and construction debris.

A grill covers the well, which residents said was installed to conserve and protect the structure. “However, people gradually stopped using the well water, and the well eventually became a neglected feature of the neighbourhood,” said a local, who did not wish to be named. Executive engineer Shrikant Raikar of Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s Public Health Engineering Department told TOI that a survey of NMC-owned wells across the city has begun, with cleaning work already initiated at some locations. On the Sahakar Nagar well, Raikar said a team would inspect the site to assess its condition and determine the steps required for its upkeep.

Located beside a residential locality, the well is barely visible behind trees and thick shrubs. They say that if it is cleaned and the water quality assessed, it could be used for gardening, construction and cleaning. TOI found dense vegetation around the well, with some growth emerging from inside it as well. Approaching the well is difficult as the surrounding plot is heavily overgrown. Download the TOI App.
