“One can hardly see the barricades around,” Patil said after speaking to residents. “There was enough barricading around the excavation site to prevent anybody from entering the restricted area,” Khatri said. The accident adds to a series of fatalities at sites where Kumbh-related works are underway across Nashik. The deceased, Prakash Wandeshkar, was a Rajiv Nagar resident. He fell into the pit and suffered severe head and chest injuries. He was pulled out of the pit by residents and taken to a local hospital. He was later shifted to the Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The pit had been excavated across the road several days ago for construction of a box culvert. Locals alleged that the site lacked adequate barricading and warning signs. He alleged that adequate warning signs and safety barriers had not been installed at the site. Patil, who has been leading protests over the condition of city roads and potholes, demanded accountability for the death. NMC commissioner Manisha Khatri, however, rejected allegations of administrative failure. Khatri claimed the motorcyclist entered the restricted stretch after removing the initial barricades as well as the secondary barriers. Wandeshkar’s post-mortem examination has been completed.
