Nashik : Cyber fraudsters siphoned off more than Rs 54.7 lakh from two Nashik residents in separate scams, luring one with promises of extraordinary investment returns and another with a bogus govt tender.
In the first case, a resident was allegedly duped of Rs 15 lakh after being promised a return of Rs 50 lakh within 30 days. Police said the victim came across a social media reel in late 2025 in which the fraudster claimed to offer unusually high returns on investments. In the second case, a man lost Rs 39.7 lakh after being promised a contract to supply foam for seats of buses operated by Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation. The fraud is alleged to have taken place between Sept 15 and Oct 10.
Police have registered separate cases in both incidents and launched investigations to trace the accused and the money trail. Police said the accused gained the victim’s confidence by producing forged documents and convinced him to deposit the amount as an earnest money deposit (EMD) for the purported tender. Believing the promise, the victim arranged the money and transferred it to a bank account specified by the suspect. When the promised returns never materialised and the fraudster stopped posting on social media and became unreachable, the victim realised he had been cheated and approached the police. The suspect disappeared after receiving the money. Download the TOI App.
