Maharashtra Governor felicitates Nashik CP Sandeep Karnik for anti-drug campaign
Since Karnik took charge in Nov 2023, Nashik city police have intensified action against drug peddlers, alongside public awareness campaigns and counselling programmes. Between Nov 2023 and Oct 2026, police registered 79 cases, arrested 174 accused and seized illegal drugs worth over Rs 2.15 crore. Mephedrone (MD) accounted for the highest number of cases, with 41 cases, 111 arrests and seizures of over 1.95kg of the synthetic drug valued at more than Rs 1.1 crore. Police also registered 30 cases involving ganja, seizing 332kg worth Rs 49.69 lakh and arresting 48 people. Other seizures included 280kg of bhang worth Rs 2.8 lakh, leading to eight arrests; 487g of amphetamine worth Rs 24.35 lakh, resulting in three arrests in one case; and 49g of charas valued at Rs 24,500, for which one person was arrested. In two cases involving Doda (poppy straw), police seized 133kg worth Rs 28.37 lakh and arrested three people.
Karnik said police had been gathering citizens’ feedback through corner meetings, interactions at jogging tracks, social media platform X and the commissioner’s WhatsApp number. Hence, apart from taking strict police action against drug peddlers, special emphasis is laid on spreading awareness among the youth to eliminate drug networks across the region,” he said. The felicitation took place at Mahakavi Kalidas Kalamandir during the Sashakt Yuva, Sashakt Bharat anti-addiction event, which included a ‘say no to drugs’ oath-taking ceremony. “Over the years, we have been consistently taking feedback from citizens through corner meetings, speaking to citizens at jogging tracks as well as on X and the CP WhatsApp number. Citizens of Nashik have been sharing their concerns about the rising menace of drugs through these platforms.
