A case was registered against seven people, including an arrested woman, under BNS Sections 318(4), for cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property, and 3(5), concerning a criminal act committed by several persons with common intention. Head constable Babasaheb Shelke of the Rahuri police station said the accused was produced before a court in Rahuri and has been remanded in three day police custody. After catching her and bringing her to the police station, they filed the complaint,” he said. The relative alerted the others, following which they apprehended her and handed her over to the Rahuri police. “The victims initially did not lodge a complaint but searched for her.

The fraud came to light on Monday when the suspect was spotted in Shirdi by the victims and a relative of one of the affected families.

The complainant, a 29-year-old resident of Kangar in Rahuri, stated that on Sept 22 he got married to a particular woman. As many as seven people from the bride’s side had taken Rs 4 lakh from his family. Meanwhile, the complainant said that on the day of his wedding, the same set of agents took Rs 4 lakh from another family from their village and arranged another girl for marriage. The family concerned had given a 20-gram gold chain to the new bride.

She said she had returned to her parents’ home and would not return to her husband. The complainant and his family searched for the bride but failed to find her. They later contacted her through the village sarpanch. The complainant’s family then realised they had been cheated. That wedding, however, had taken place in Shrirampur taluka. However, two days after the wedding, the agents took away the girl under some pretext and never received the phone calls of the victims.
