Sadhugram, a designated place at Tapovan where sadhus are accommodated during the Kumbh Melas
Nashik : The slow pace of land requisition and acquisition by the civic body for Sadhugram and other critical infrastructure projects for the Simhasth Kumbh Mela 2027 is raising concerns. Sadhugram, the designated township for sadhus and seers during the mela, occupied around 350 acres during the last Kumbh in 2015. Officials said besides the existing 350 acres of reserved land at Tapovan, around 1,050 acres will be temporarily requisitioned from farmers in Nandur, Manur and adjoining areas on a lease basis during the Kumbh Mela period. NMC officials said the civic body already had around 90 acres, while nearly 191 acres are proposed to be acquired permanently before the Kumbh Mela. State govt has sanctioned Rs 2,200 crore for land acquisition and related infrastructure works.
However, authorities expect a substantial rise in the number of sadhus and sects in 2027 and have therefore proposed expanding the facility to nearly 1,400 acres. In a letter to Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC), the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority (NTKMA) directed officials to expedite the process and stressed the need to accelerate both requisition and compensation procedures to ensure timely availability and to submit compensation proposals for affected landowners at the earliest to avoid delays in the execution of key Kumbh-related projects. The proposed projects included the expansion of Sadhugram, internal parking facilities, holding areas, a helipad and other infrastructure required for the religious congregation. The expanded Sadhugram has been planned to include temporary sanitation facilities, bathing areas, internal roads, electrification, sector offices, police posts, shelters for devotees and designated commercial zones. The remaining land required for Sadhugram and allied facilities will be secured through temporary requisition from landowners. Download the TOI App.
