Lasalgaon APMC
Nashik : Wholesale onion prices at Lasalgaon APMC, the country’s largest onion market, dropped 10.6% over the last three days after Centre began releasing onions from its buffer stock to cool retail prices. The average wholesale price dropped from Rs 4,250 per quintal on Monday to Rs 3,800 per quintal on Thursday, coinciding with govt’s decision to supply buffer stock onions in major cities. The first ‘Kanda Express’ left Lasalgaon for Delhi on Wednesday with 500 tonnes of onions. APMC officials and traders linked the decline directly to Centre’s move to sell buffer stock onions at Rs 35 per kg in Delhi and other urban markets. Nearly 40% of the arrivals are good-quality onions, fetching relatively higher prices, while the remaining 60% comprise medium-grade produce, attracting lower bids. Onions traded at an average price of Rs 3,800 per quintal on Thursday, with rates ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 4,401 per quintal, according to Lasalgaon APMC data. A total of 8,756 quintals arrived for auction during the day.
Traders have also scaled back procurement over the past few days, adding further pressure on rates,” an APMC official said. Market officials said quality continued to play a crucial role in price discovery. “We want govt to stop releasing buffer stock onions into the domestic market because it directly hurts farmers,” Jaideep Bhadane, core committee member of the Maharashtra Onion Growers’ Association, said.
“The release of buffer stock has impacted market sentiment and triggered a correction in wholesale prices. Centre’s intervention has, however, sparked criticism from onion growers, who argued that the move came just as farmers had begun recovering from months of depressed prices.
