NHM hiring will remain with govt despite staff regularisation: The wider industry impact

NHM runs programmes covering maternal and child health, routine immunisation, tuberculosis control, prevention of vector-borne diseases, disease surveillance, mental healthcare and mobile medical services

Pune: Potential vacancies arising under National Health Mission (NHM) following the absorption of 14,788 long-serving employees on contract into permanent govt service would not be filled through private recruitment agencies, NHM commissioner Sanjay Katkar told TOI on Monday. A total of 14,788 employees, who completed 10 years of service under various NHM programmes as on June 25, 2026, have been absorbed into permanent govt service against supernumerary posts. The govt creating supernumerary posts does not automatically mean that 14,788 existing NHM posts will be vacant.

Ruling out such a possibility, Katkar said, “No third-party agency will be involved in recruitment even if NHM posts fall vacant following the reassignment of employees to equivalent positions elsewhere in the health department. The number of actual vacancies would depend on how employees were reassigned and how their original positions were treated, Katkar said. The existing process of recruitment on contract will continue. The assurance comes amid concerns that the govt may outsource recruitment for the vacated posts. NHM, a flagship Centre-state public health initiative, aims to provide affordable and accessible healthcare, particularly to vulnerable populations in rural and urban areas. It runs programmes covering maternal and child health, routine immunisation, tuberculosis control, prevention of vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue, disease surveillance, mental healthcare and mobile medical services. These programmes rely on a large workforce of doctors, nurses, technicians and other healthcare and non-medical personnel, many employed on contract.

Under the one-time arrangement, employees completing at least 10 years of service on contract, excluding technical breaks, as of June 25, 2026, are eligible for absorption into equivalent posts.
