Nashik : Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority (NTKMA) has approved Nashik Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) Rs 90-crore healthcare plan for the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela, paving the way for a major upgrade of the city’s medical infrastructure ahead of one of the country’s largest religious gatherings. The proposed facilities, estimated to cost around Rs 15 crore, are aimed at ensuring immediate medical care in the event of accidents or any other untoward incidents during the Kumbh. Officials said the healthcare plan forms a crucial part of the overall preparations for Simhastha 2027. The Kumbh Mela Authority has projected that nearly 10 crore pilgrims could visit Nashik and another 4 crore pilgrims to Trimbakeshwar during the event, necessitating extensive planning across sectors, including roads, sanitation, water supply, crowd management and healthcare.
Officials said the investment would continue to benefit the city even after the religious event. Once the Kumbh Mela concludes, the porta-cabins are proposed to be repurposed as urban primary health centres and health sub-centres in different parts of Nashik city. The healthcare plan also includes creation of new operation theatres and intensive care units at four civic hospitals.
With the approval of the healthcare proposal, NMC is expected to initiate the implementation process in the coming months so that critical medical infrastructure and emergency response systems are in place well before the arrival of millions of devotees for the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela. The religious congregation is scheduled to be held in 2027, with the three Amrit Snans expected between Aug and Sept next year. NMC estimates that nearly 98 ambulances will be required during the Kumbh Mela. Of these, 25 ambulances will be procured by the civic body, while 73 will be hired on lease. The ambulance component of the healthcare plan is estimated to cost Rs9.22 crore. These provisions are estimated to cost nearly Rs 15 crore and are intended to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services throughout the event.
The healthcare plan aims to ensure round-the-clock medical services for pilgrims, sadhus and local residents during the event while significantly enhancing the city’s preparedness to deal with medical emergencies, disease outbreaks and other public health challenges associated with large gatherings, according to civic officials. The proposal, cleared by divisional commissioner and NTKMA chairperson Praveen Gedam, focuses on strengthening emergency healthcare services and expanding medical facilities to cater to the huge influx of pilgrims expected during the Kumbh Mela. A key component of the plan is the establishment of porta-cabin-based healthcare facilities at strategic locations, including Sadhugram, Godaghat and designated parking areas. These temporary structures will house hospitals, clinics, intensive care units and other medical facilities required during the Kumbh Mela. The project is estimated to cost around Rs11 crore. The civic body has also planned a substantial expansion of its emergency transport network. To address the expected surge in demand for healthcare services, NMC has proposed recruiting expert doctors, specialist consultants, medical practitioners, nurses, technicians and other healthcare personnel during the Kumbh period. The recruitment and deployment of manpower is expected to cost around Rs20 crore. Apart from infrastructure and staffing, the civic body has earmarked substantial funds for the procurement of medicines, diagnostic equipment, laboratory testing facilities and other essential medical supplies.
