Nagpur: Allegations of irregularities in the distribution of development funds under the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) weaker sections committee have triggered a political controversy, with the opposition questioning how proposals worth Rs55 crore were processed against a budgetary provision of just Rs30 crore.
The opposition has questioned why files for works worth an additional Rs 25 crore were processed despite the sanctioned provision being Rs 30 crore. Leader of Opposition Sanjay Mahakalkar has written to municipal commissioner Vipin Itankar, demanding an inquiry into the alleged irregularities and suspension of the concerned works until the investigation is completed. The weaker sections committee, which undertakes development works in slum areas to bring economically disadvantaged sections into the mainstream, is considered one of the important committees in the civic body. It allocates funds for infrastructure and civic amenities in slum pockets across the city. However, allegations have surfaced that funds were distributed to corporators through contractors, with only a select few members benefiting from the allocation. It has also sought clarity on who benefited from the additional allocation, claiming several corporators did not receive funds despite seeking them for their wards. Mahakalkar alleged that contractors interfered in the allocation process and rules were violated. He demanded a detailed probe and asked the commissioner to halt the works until the allegations are examined.

She said corporators were given funds for slum development irrespective of their political affiliations, with allocations varying according to requirements. Committee chairperson Laxmi Hattithele, however, rejected the allegations, maintaining that funds were allocated strictly as per rules. Download the TOI App.
