Nashik : The city could see a sweeping overhaul of its transport infrastructure over the next three decades, with the city’s revised Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) proposing projects worth nearly Rs 26,839 crore, including a 58.08-km mass rapid transit system (MRTS), over 1,300 additional city buses, new roads and bridges, cycling tracks, pedestrian facilities and a dedicated transport strategy for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela.
Prepared by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro) for the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC), the plan charts the city’s mobility needs up to 2056. The plan recommends 125 km of pedestrian infrastructure, 88.3 km of cycle tracks and nearly 14 km of riverfront non-motorised transport corridors, along with safer crossings, pedestrian grade separators and accessibility improvements.
The CMP has been prepared after assessing Nashik’s changing population, urban growth, vehicle ownership trends and travel patterns through surveys, transport studies and demand modelling, according to MahaMetro. The revised CMP has been submitted to the civic administration for approval before it is opened for public consultation. Walking and cycling form another major component of the proposal.
To address parking issues, the CMP recommends regulated on-street and off-street parking backed by technology-driven management systems and a comprehensive parking policy covering pricing, regulation and enforcement.
