Pune: A 69-year-old retired bank officer from Bavdhan lost Rs 1.90: The wider industry impact

Pune: A 69-year-old retired bank officer from Bavdhan lost Rs 1.90 lakh to a cybercrook who allegedly promised to help him obtain his life certificate, a mandatory document for pensioners. The fraudster sent him an APK file, which, when downloaded, gave the crook access to his cellphone and enabled him to siphon money from his bank account.

Inspector PR Shikalgar of the Bavdhan police told TOI that on Oct 24, the complainant was browsing his social media account when he came across a page that appeared to belong to his bank. The officer said the fraudsters subsequently carried out three transactions and siphoned Rs 1.9 lakh from the complainant’s bank account.

“Our investigation so far has revealed that the money was immediately used to make purchases through an e-commerce website,” he said. Shikalgar said the police had written to the bank and the e-commerce website seeking details of the transactions. “Our investigation is on,” he said.

As he wanted to obtain his life certificate, he clicked on the page. Soon afterwards, he received a call on a mobile messaging app from an unknown number. The caller claimed to be a bank officer and assured him that he could help obtain the certificate.
