Pune: Fraudsters posing as the director of a solar panel manufacturing company cheated it of Rs 4 crore. The 67-year-old director of the Katraj-based company lodged a complaint with Pune cyber police on Wednesday.
The crime occurred between Sept 23 and 25, when the complainant was on an overseas trip with his family.
Officials of the company were kept informed, police said.

“The suspects used the complainant’s display picture on a messaging platform and contacted the company’s accounts officer,” senior inspector Swapnali Shinde said. She said the suspects, posing as the complainant, told the accounts officer that the company’s vendors needed to be paid immediately. “Using strong language, he sent a message to the accounts staff, telling them to transfer money to a few bank accounts without delay,” Shinde said. “But seeing his DP, they transferred the money in two days without checking the bank accounts’ details,” she said. “He told them he never issued any such instructions,” Shinde said, adding that the accounts manager and his staff would be questioned.
The accounts department must clear such payments with the director. The fraud came to light when the company’s staff called the complainant to confirm receipt. Download the TOI App.
