Vehicles started piling up on the road around 9 am and the jam soon reached University Junction. However, a two-metre slope remained unfinished due to a shortage of bitumen. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) was constructing the raised pedestrian crossing for residents of Khairewadi to help them cross Ganeshkhind Road safely, according to city traffic police. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sandeep Bhajibhakare told TOI , “The workers exhausted their cement supply and left the work incomplete. “As vehicles could not cross University Junction, it affected traffic heading towards Aundh, Baner and Pashan from Shivajinagar,” Bhajibhakare said. “It took us over three hours to clear the traffic jam,” the DCP traffic said. Rajesh Bankar, head of PMC’s road development department, said, “More than half of the raised pedestrian crossing was completed overnight. I then took an autorickshaw to Paud Road and reached Shivajinagar by Metro,” Baijal said. She said the entire road was blocked during the busy morning hours. “Office-goers were sitting helplessly in their cars or on two-wheelers,” she said.
Vehicles could not get past the raised pedestrian crossing, leaving only one lane available for traffic. The traffic jam then spilt over to Pashan Road, Aundh Road and Baner Road, turning what began as incomplete roadwork into a massive traffic headache. Meanwhile, a cab heading towards University Junction from Shivajinagar crashed into a road median. No one was injured in the incident, but the car got stuck at the spot. This just added to an already congested situation on Ganeshkhind Road. The department has sought details from the contractor and would decide on further action after reviewing the response. Aboli Baijal, an ophthalmologist from Bavdhan, was stuck on Ganeshkhind Road near SPPU. She had important work and was trying to reach Shivajinagar. “I had to park my car at a safe place. The incomplete crossing, abandoned after workers ran out of cement, was being constructed on the lane used by vehicles coming from University Junction towards Shivajinagar. It reduced traffic to a single lane and triggered a domino effect of congestion across Ganeshkhind Road, Shimla Office Chowk, SB Road, FC Road and JM Road.
