Pimpri Chinchwad police commissioner Vinoy Kumar Choubey felicitates crime branch team for detecting 15 chain snatching cases
Pune: Pimpri Chinchwad crime branch on Wednesday claimed to have detected 15 chain-snatching cases with the arrest of a habitual chain snatcher and his accomplice. The police recovered 27 tolas of gold jewellery worth Rs35.33 lakh from the accused, Fida Hussain Irani (33), and his accomplice, Mukesh Netke (38), both residents of Patil Estate in Shivajinagar. A crime branch team led by senior police inspector Sanjay Chavan arrested the duo after examining footage from more than 500 CCTV cameras. On May 12, two men riding a motorcycle snatched a gold chain worth Rs90,000 from a 41-year-old nurse at Nigdi Pradhikaran. The DCP said the police received a tip-off that Irani would be coming to Dehu Road on Sept 5. He said that during sustained interrogation, Irani admitted to having snatched 15 gold chains over the past few months with the help of three accomplices.

Deputy commissioner of police (crime) Rohidas Pawar of the Pimpri Chinchwad police said that an examination of the CCTV footage showed that after snatching the chain, the duo fled towards Mumbai. “With the help of CCTV footage, technical investigation and a tip-off, inspector Chavan and his team ascertained the identity of the snatcher as Fida Irani,” Pawar said. “We nabbed Irani and Netke from Dehu Road,” Pawar said. “Of the 15 cases, 13 were registered with the Pimpri Chinchwad police and two with the Pune police,” he said. Pawar said Irani is wanted in five more chain-snatching cases registered with the Pimpri Chinchwad police. Netke has a case of drug possession against him,” Pawar said.
The woman later lodged a complaint with the Nigdi police. They were wearing helmets and had covered their faces with masks. The snatchers used sports bikes to commit the crimes. “He has previous cases, including attempted murder and chain snatching, registered against him. The investigating team included assistant police inspectors Pandurang Devkate, Gorakshnath Balwadkar and Raosaheb Mote, and police sub-inspectors Shivanand Swami and Mahesh Khande.
