PUNE: A 33-year-old IT professional allegedly faced years of harassment from her husband and in-laws over money, a flat and demands linked to her sister-in-law’s education loan, before being repeatedly pressured to grant her husband a divorce so he could remarry, police said. The woman was found dead at her Keshavnagar flat in Mundhwa on September 29, and police have now booked five members of her in-laws’ family for alleged abetment to suicide. The case was registered on Monday after the woman’s 74-year-old father approached Mundhwa police. The woman had allegedly been subjected to harassment over money by her in-laws since 2018, according to police.

Senior inspector Smita Wasnik of Mundhwa police said investigators had found a note purportedly written by the woman, in which she attributed her decision to end her life to alleged harassment by her husband and in-laws. The accused include her husband, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law and grandmother-in-law. The sister-in-law has been arrested in Mumbai. She was allegedly pressured to arrange funds to purchase a flat and transfer it to her husband’s name. The demands reportedly extended to money from her parental home to repay a loan taken for her sister-in-law’s education. Police are investigating the allegations as part of the abetment-to-suicide case.
