Pune: The civic administration has decided to finally expedite pending works related

Vehicles cross lanes unchecked on Vishrantwadi Road after the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) removed the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes without installing medians, leaving commuters vulnerable to head-on collisions and severe accident risks

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) road department will spend Rs 4.23 crore on these works.

The work will begin in phases,” a civic official said. Regular commuters said passengers were forced to wait by the roadside without proper shelters ever since the stops were shifted from the BRTS lanes. Pune: The civic administration has decided to finally expedite pending works related to the removal of BRTS lanes and bus stops along the busy Vishrantwadi Road. The plan also includes reconstructing road medians and providing proper pedestrian crossings. The BRTS lanes on Vishrantwadi Road were removed a few months ago, but associated infrastructure, including bus stops and metal barriers, was not completely cleared, posing risks to commuters. Local residents expressed concern over the haphazard execution of the work, claiming that despite repeated follow-ups, the civic administration had failed to take steps to clear the carriageways. “Some temporary arrangements were in place over the past few months. A detailed review was conducted recently, and the plan has now been finalised to shift the bus stops and reconstruct the medians. Major concerns included the absence of medians, damaged barricades, and the lack of designated shelters for PMPML bus stops.

Local corporators said the BRTS lanes were removed in July ahead of Palkhi processions, and the administration was expected to complete the remaining work soon after. They said authorities must set firm deadlines to complete the outstanding work at the earliest. Local sources said the BRTS lanes had contributed to traffic congestion and adversely affected overall traffic movement.

However, the work remained pending for nearly four months. Moreover, PMC is constructing a grade separator and flyover at Vishrantwadi Chowk, and the BRTS infrastructure was also obstructing the project. Download the TOI App.
