Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar : A 22-year-old man was arrested for allegedly murdering his elder brother with an axe while he slept at a village in Ambad tehsil, with police saying the accused cited years of harassment linked to the victim’s alcoholism as the motive.
Personnel from Gondi police station went to the spot after receiving information about the murder and launched an investigation.
Police said Tukaram was allegedly addicted to alcohol and frequently quarrelled with and assaulted family members. Investigators said the repeated harassment had created deep resentment within the family, particularly towards the younger brother. Rameshwar allegedly attacked Tukaram with an axe while he was asleep, killing him on the spot, according to the police. Jalna superintendent of police Teghbir Singh Sandhu said initial evidence suggested that the killer was someone known to the victim. Investigators said he told them he was driven by anger over his brother’s alcoholism and the repeated harassment of their parents.
The incident took place in Ghungarde Hadgaon village on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. “When we examined the crime scene, it appeared that the offence had been committed by someone familiar to the deceased. Police detained Rameshwar for questioning, during which he allegedly admitted to the crime. A murder case has been registered and the accused has been arrested.
The crime came to light after the victim’s wife raised an alarm early on Tuesday morning.
Our teams questioned family members and others associated with him, which eventually led us to the victim’s younger brother,” Sandhu said.
