All talukas in Nagpur district have been declared drought-hit under Trigger-1, prompting Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and the district administration to impose curbs on misuse of potable water. Residents fear the arrival of an estimated 20,000 people during the session will put additional pressure on the city’s water supply network, potentially affecting residential areas. The city requires around 740 million litres per day (MLD), and water consumption rises during the winter session. It operates more than 100 overhead tanks that distribute water to buildings across the city. In 2023, PWD installed automated pumps to prevent tanks from overflowing. The system switches on pumps when water levels dip to 25% and shuts them off automatically before tanks reach full capacity. The winter session is scheduled to begin on Dec 7, but support staff and security personnel start arriving 10 days earlier.
Because of the session would be a priority, nagpur: As water scarcity fuelled by drought threatens to cast a shadow over the state legislature’s winter session in Nagpur this Dec, Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar told TOI that ensuring city residents don’t face water cuts.
Our priority is clear: citizens’ access to water must not be affected,” he said. “We understand the gravity of the situation, and every effort will be made to ensure the winter session does not inconvenience citizens. I will seek a report from officials on Nagpur’s water stock and ways to conserve water during our stay there. December is also a peak month for the hospitality sector, with hotels and even small lodges reporting full occupancy, adding to demand. However, no official figures were available on additional water consumption during the session. Public Works Department (PWD) is responsible for ensuring uninterrupted water supply from the civic body to the legislature building, temporary offices and residential accommodation for govt staff. The session typically lasts two weeks, sometimes longer.
In an exclusive interaction with TOI, Narwekar sought to address these concerns, saying officials would be asked to explore water conservation measures and submit a report before the session.
PWD prepares for an official influx of around 15,000 people, including legislators, bureaucrats, drivers, peons and other support staff. Another estimated 5,000 people, including protesters, political party workers and others troop to the city to pursue their work during the session.
