New Initiative Promotes Parent-Teacher Communication
The education department has launched an initiative designed to foster ongoing dialogue between schools and parents. This effort aims to move beyond traditional, formal interactions, encouraging teachers to engage with parents about various aspects of students’ educational experiences. Discussions will focus on students’ academic progress, assessment strategies, reading habits, home study environments, attendance, behavior, and challenges in learning.
In addition, headmasters, teachers, and school management committees have been instructed to ensure active parent participation. They are required to compile and submit consolidated reports on these activities periodically, reinforcing the initiative’s commitment to enhancing communication and collaboration between families and schools.
The directive, issued by the education commissionerate on Aug 27, applies to primary and secondary schools across all mediums and managements. The meetings in July, Oct, Jan and April, will focus on students’ academic progress, attendance, learning difficulties, health, nutrition and participation in school activities. teachers have raised concerns that another mandatory activity could further eat into classroom teaching time While the department expects the meetings to improve parent involvement in children’s education. The meetings are to be conducted at the school level, preferably on the first Saturday of the specified months. Parents will also be informed about govt educational schemes, school activities, annual plans, competitions and other programmes. The meetings are expected to increase their participation in areas such as children’s health, nutrition, cleanliness, safety and child protection.
