In Kolhapur, a hostel rector has been arrested in connection with the suicide of a 19-year-old student on September 2. Police are actively pursuing the college principal and members of the counselling committee, who have been charged with abetment of suicide. The investigation is ongoing as authorities seek to hold those responsible accountable.

Three days later, on Sept 5, police registered an FIR based on a complaint filed by her father, Bhanudas Birmane, and arrested hostel rector Jayashri Jakate. He added the rector has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days, and police are reserving right to take custody.

Police said the rector, principal and counselling committee members have been booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita provisions related to abetment of suicide and common intent.
