Nashik’s Kotwali police have apprehended four individuals for allegedly sourcing prescription-only cardiac stimulant injections via social media. These injections were reportedly sold illegally to gym-goers as performance-enhancing substances. The operation highlights ongoing concerns over the misuse of prescription medications in fitness circles, raising alarms about public health and safety.
Police Uncover Illegal Drug Sales Targeting Fitness Enthusiasts
On September 3, a police patrol team led by Sub-Inspector Ganesh Deshmukh conducted a raid near Gandhi Maidan, uncovering a scheme involving the illegal sale of mephentermine sulphate injections. Initially, three suspects were arrested and 40 vials of the drug were seized. A fourth suspect was apprehended on Friday as the investigation expanded.
Authorities revealed that the accused operated without the necessary licenses to sell medicines, sourcing the drug through social media platforms. They sold the injections to young fitness enthusiasts without providing prescriptions or bills, raising serious health concerns.
Inspector Nitin Deshmukh confirmed that the investigation led to the arrest of an additional suspect. Mephentermine sulphate is classified as a Schedule H drug, which means it can only be sold with a valid medical prescription. This cardiac stimulant is primarily used in hospitals to treat severe low blood pressure, but misuse can lead to significant health risks.
“The suspects possessed no drug sales licenses and were peddling the injections without proper documentation to local gym-goers,” police officials stated.
Investigation Targets Online Drug Supply Network
Inspector Deshmukh confirmed that the investigation is now concentrating on tracing the source of drug supplies and identifying any broader networks operating within the city. He stated, “We are investigating the case and have stepped up intelligence gathering to find out if there are other people involved in a similar business of procuring online drugs and selling them to gym-goers.” This focus aligns with increasing concerns about the availability of illicit substances being marketed to fitness enthusiasts.
