Mumbai Police cites lack of permission for protest
More than 1,500 people have been detained from several parts of Delhi ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) proposed protest at Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, as police intensified preventive measures across the national capital.
Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and head of the organisation ‘Hum Bharat Ke Log’, was picked up from Bandra and taken to DN Nagar police station, an official said. Activist Feeroz Mithiborwala was also taken into custody from his residence and shifted to the MIDC police station, officials said. Ahead of the proposed gathering, Zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police Ragasudha R said no application seeking permission for the event had been submitted to Gamdevi police station and no official approval had been granted. Authorities said August Kranti Maidan is not a designated protest site under a Bombay High Court order.
Police took preventive action to maintain law and order ahead of the proposed demonstration.
