A 56-year-old woman was killed by a garbage truck at the Turbhe railway station intersection, driver was assaulted by a mob

NAVI MUMBAI: A 56-year-old woman was killed after being knocked down by a garbage truck belonging to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) at the intersection near Turbhe railway station on the Thane-Belapur Road on Monday at around 4.45pm. The truck driver was identified as Ram Lodh (23), a resident of Govandi, who works as a contract driver for a BMC garbage truck. The fatal accident has once again highlighted concerns over the dangerous intersection at Turbhe Store, near the railway station, and the delay in completing the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s (NMMC) flyover project, estimated to cost Rs 32 crore, which has been pending for the past seven years. NMMC approved a 560-metre-long, four-lane flyover at Turbhe Store in 2019. Work on the long-delayed flyover near Turbhe railway station on the busy Thane-Belapur Road resumed in April 2026 after IIT Mumbai approved a new design.

Her body was covered with a black cloth due to the gruesome nature of the scene. Officials had confirmed progress on key pending components, but excavation remains the only visible progress at the site.

Sunil Shinde, senior inspector of Turbhe police station, said the deceased was identified as Chhaya Gaikwad, a resident of Baba Gulli in Turbhe Store. The impact was so severe that the woman’s internal organs were exposed. A mob gathered at the spot and severely assaulted the truck driver. Police personnel from Turbhe police station rushed to the scene, rescued the driver and escorted him to the police station. At the time of going to press, Turbhe police were in the process of registering an FIR against the truck driver. The accident occurred while Lodh was heading towards Shilphata in Thane district, where BMC garbage trucks are parked. An FIR will be registered against him under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act for rash and negligent driving causing death. The contract was awarded to Mahavir Roads and Infrastructure Pvt Ltd.

23 people have died in accidents at the same intersection over the past 10 years, while more than 50 have sustained serious injuries, according to the Turbhe Store Sangharsh Samiti. In November 2024, residents organised a signature campaign and submitted a memorandum to the NMMC commissioner, demanding the completion of the Turbhe flyover. Vehicles travelling from Thane towards Belapur have been particularly inconvenienced due to the bottleneck.
