Nashik: The civic body has sought an additional 1,605 million cubic feet of water for the upcoming reservation cycle, proposing a quota of 8,005 MCFT to meet the city’s needs and the massive demand expected during the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela. The proposal, submitted to the district administration for the period from Oct 15, 2026, to Aug 31, 2027, is around 25% higher than the 6,400 MCFT allocated to Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) in the previous cycle. “We have sought around 8,000 MCFT of water considering the city’s requirements as well as the increased demand expected during the Kumbh Mela next year. Civic officials said Nashik’s routine requirement during the reservation period is estimated at 7,370 MCFT. An additional 635 MCFT has been sought for the Kumbh Mela, when lakhs of pilgrims and sadhus are expected to converge on the city. Preparations for the event are expected to gather momentum after the Dhwajarohan ceremony on Oct 31, which will formally mark the start of Simhastha Kumbh activities. The three Amrit Snans are scheduled between Aug and Sept 2027. Under the proposal, NMC has sought 5,505 MCFT from the Gangapur dam complex, 2,270 MCFT from Mukane dam and 230 MCFT from Darna dam. Gangapur currently supplies nearly 80% of the city’s water needs. Officials noted that while NMC was allocated 6,400 MCFT in 2025-26, its actual consumption stood at 6,061 MCFT. Around 10 lakh sadhus are expected to stay at the proposed 1,400-acre Sadhugram, which alone is estimated to require 140 million litres of water a day. NMC has also projected an additional requirement of 160 MLD to cater to the expected influx of eight crore to 10 crore pilgrims during the religious congregation.

The proposal has already been submitted to the district administration for approval,” said Ravindra Dharankar, superintending engineer of NMC’s water supply department. The final allocation is expected to be decided at a meeting chaired by district guardian minister Girish Mahajan next week. The civic body has separately projected water demand linked to the Kumbh Mela.
