Mumbai: The city’s air quality slipped into the moderate category on Thursday as the Air Quality Index (AQI) jumped sharply to 120 from Wednesday’s 91, pushing the metropolis and neighbouring regions like Thane, which recorded 114, and Navi Mumbai, at 104, into similar conditions for only the second time this season. Within Mumbai itself, air quality varied widely, with the worst locations being Worli at 160, Deonar at 154, and Navy Nagar Colaba at 150. Kandivli at 73 and Sion at 80 remained the best locations in the city. This shift marks the first continuous spell of moderate AQI, spanning between 100 and 200, since April of this year, following months where the air quality generally remained in the good category of 50 or less or satisfactory up to 100.

Independent meteorologist Abhijeet Modak said, “We should expect 100+ AQI levels each day all the way until Dec with intermittent spikes on days like Diwali.”

He added, “Then, Dec onwards is when it will be the highest due to temperature inversion which traps pollutants near the ground; we will see daily AQI levels cross 200, and this has been the general pattern over the last few years.
