WORK IN PROGRESS
Nashik : The construction of two additional service road lanes over the Ranenagar vehicular underpass (VUP) on Mumbai-Agra highway is 90% complete and is likely to be opened to traffic by mid-Nov, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials said. Meanwhile, drilling work for an additional tunnel at the nearby Indiranagar VUP is also scheduled to begin by mid-Nov, with a completion deadline set for the end of March 2027. Work on adding the two lanes at Ranenagar underpass commenced in June 2025 to address worsening traffic congestion.
Due to rapid residential and commercial development along the highway, the underpass has seen a heavy, continuous flow of vehicles. The project is currently in its testing phase. Officials stated that the additional lanes will be opened to the public as soon as the traffic police grant approval for diverting vehicles onto the new stretch. To resolve this bottleneck, NHAI decided to extend the length of VUP structure and build two dedicated service lanes over it. This allows motorists travelling on the service roads, from Pathardi Phata toward Indiranagar and vice versa, to bypass the crossover traffic entirely by using the elevated lanes. NHAI officials reiterated that with structural work nearly complete, the focus has shifted to safety testing. Following the mid-November launch, the NHAI will immediately pivot to drilling a new underpass next to the existing one at Indiranagar to streamline traffic arriving from the Govindnagar side. Previously, motorists driving straight along parallel service roads frequently became trapped in crossover traffic generated by vehicles turning through the underpass or merging from adjoining Ranenagar junction roads.
