Kochi : Eleven Mahatma Gandhi University-affiliated colleges in Ernakulam district will introduce undergraduate and postgraduate courses with 522 seats in 2027-28, though funding and staffing conditions have raised concerns among college administrations.
“Psychology has emerged as a popular field,” said Fr Varghese Valiyaparambil, manager of St Paul’s College. College administrations said the new programmes would be difficult to run without adequate faculty support. A senior MGU official acknowledged the concerns and said they would be conveyed to state govt if colleges formally approach the university.
BSc psychology has been allotted to Al-Ameen College, Edathala; Baselios Poulose II Catholicos College, Piravom; Govt College, Tripunithura; Aquinas College, Edakochi; St Paul’s College, Kalamassery; Cochin College, Chullikkal; and Sree Sankara College, Kalady. A state govt directive requires govt and aided colleges to run the courses without additional expenditure to the state or new teaching posts for five years.
