Madurai: The state government on Thursday informed Madras high court that close to 140 buses would be operated for the public to travel to attend the annual Immanuvel Sekaran memorial day in Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram district. The petitioner sought a direction to the authorities to prescribe a procedure, time limit and manner for receiving, considering and disposing of applications seeking government buses on contract carriage basis in accordance with the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and the applicable Rules, without arbitrary refusal, particularly during the annual Immanuvel Sekaran memorial day on September 11. Taking into account the submissions, a division bench of Justice C V Karthikeyan and Justice R Sakthivel directed the authorities to depute two police personnel in each bus. The court passed the order while disposing of a public interest litigation filed by C Selvakumar. The court also disposed of another petition seeking a direction to provide one bus for people from Theni district to Paramakudi to participate in the memorial day.
