2 inmates assault staff at Palayamkottai jail
A senior prison official told TOI that the incident occurred around 2 pm following a dispute over serving food.
In a fit of rage, the duo attacked the staff with their hands,” said the official. Prison officials said the situation inside the prison remained normal after the incident and was handled promptly by the staff. The prisoners, Kottai alias Sundaram, and Mahesh , both under-trials facing theft cases, became agitated after they alleged that curry (kolambu) had not been served to them properly at lunch. “When the inmates were being escorted by assistant jailor Kasi Pandian and chief head warden Manikandan , an argument broke out between the staff and inmates. The tooth of the chief head warder was broken in the assault, while the assistant jailor sustained a minor bruise near his eyebrow. Other prison staff quickly brought the situation under control. A complaint was lodged with Perumalpuram police station, and a case registered against the two inmates.
An orderly reportedly informed the authorities about the issue, following which the inmates were to be brought before the jailor’s office for an inquiry, added the official.
