Madurai: The Vaigai riverbed, near the spot where Kallazhagar enters the river, was turned into a parking lot for customers visiting nearby textile showrooms, prompting district authorities to intervene after Madurai MP Su Venkatesan flagged the issue on Tuesday.

Venkatesan said the public works department’s chief engineer told him that the department, Madurai corporation and city police held keys to the entrance gate but denied opening it. Responding to the MP’s complaint, district collector Nishant Krishna said various department officials inspected the site. The engineer initially arranged for vehicles to be removed and sent photographs confirming the action. However, residents subsequently shared photographs showing cars parked inside and the gate wide open. They found the main entrance gate damaged and cleared all vehicles. The corporation has been directed to repair and secure the gate. Welcoming the intervention, Venkatesan demanded identification of those who damaged the gate using CCTV cameras nearby. He also questioned why the water resources department had not lodged a complaint and sought a permanent solution. Download the TOI App.
The intervention followed complaints that cars had returned to the riverbed despite being removed a day earlier following a newspaper report.
