Kochi: As the political storm rises from various corners over the alleged negligence on the part of the UDF council towards Samridhi @Kochi hotels and She lodge, the successful projects of the previous LDF governing body, the budget for 2026-27 announced the launch of Indira canteen to provide food at affordable rates. It earmarked Rs 50 lakhs for the project. Initially, it proposes to start at Edapally and Fort Kochi. Later, it will be expanded to major centres in the city.
Opposition leader V A Sreejith said the UDF council is trying to undermine the Samridhi project launched by the LDF council.
However, deputy mayor Deepk Joy denied it and said the budget proposes to start a centralised kitchen at Padiyathukulam, near St Teresa’s College. Food prepared here will be transported to Samridhi hotels,” he said. “Currently, corporation vehicles used for waste management are parked in Padiyathukulam. We shift the vehicles to Brahmapuram and utilise the land for setting up a centralised kitchen in a new building.
