Authorities investigate multiplex snack pricing in Kochi

Kochi : On the instructions of food and civil supplies minister Anoop Jacob, a squad led by the district supply officer, the legal metrology deputy controller, and the food safety officer conducted a raid at multiplex theatres in the city. The inspection was carried out following widespread complaints that the cafes operating in the theatres were charging unfair prices.

The official team gave notice to the theatre manager, stating that the prices were very high and that it would be reported to govt. The inspection team found that the complaints were true in two malls. Sales were conducted legally by displaying a price list, but it was found that popcorn and soft drinks were priced five times higher than in the open market. Strict instructions were given to change the prices to align with the prices in the open market. A case was registered against the cafes that did not display a price list.
