CCTV footage revealed a Mini Cooper colliding with a scooter, resulting in the immediate deaths of three occupants
Police probe suspected intoxication, high speed
The accident occurred around 1.45am on Sunday on the airport road in Nedumbassery. Police arrested the driver, Suhail Sajeev (19), whose father is an Alappuzha South native, on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. His co-passenger, Ninav (19), has also been arrested.
“The driver was saying that his father will handle everything,” Salim told news agency ANI, recounting the exchange before police and an ambulance arrived. Police said they would record statements and take further action if any additional offence was established. Ernakulam Rural district police chief KS Sudarshan said Suhail was taken into custody at the scene and underwent a medical examination.
Police suspect the car was travelling at more than 120kmph, based on witness accounts. Residents intercepted the car after the collision, and an argument reportedly broke out when the driver appeared to downplay the gravity of the incident. Police later had to use force to protect Suhail from an angry crowd when he was taken to a hospital for medical examination. Reports also emerged that his co-passenger had made remarks about the driver’s father taking care of the situation. Blood and urine samples were collected for forensic analysis to determine whether he had consumed alcohol or other intoxicants.
