Chennai: A 70-year-old woman lost a five-sovereign gold jewellery item to a man who posed as a hospital employee at Tiruvallur Govt Hospital on Monday.

Police said a man, who identified himself as a hospital staffer, told her that patients were not allowed to wear jewellery while undergoing a scan and asked her to remove the valuables she was wearing. The woman, Poongodi, wife of Madhavan, from Thiruninravur, had visited the GH for a medical examination. She was asked to undergo an MRI scan and was waiting near the scanning room. Poongodi handed over the five-sovereign gold jewellery item to him. The man then left with the jewellery. Poongodi later realised that she was cheated and informed the hospital authorities. She later lodged a complaint with Tiruvallur Town police. Police visited the hospital and began examining CCTV footage from the premises to trace the suspect. Download the TOI App.
