Chennai: An elderly man hacked a 29-year-old man on the head with a sickle following a drunken brawl near Thimmavaram in Chengalpet.
The victim is receiving treatment at a hospital and his condition is said to be critical.
Police said Balaji of Thimmavaram, who worked at a private factory in Sriperumbudur, was returning home on a two-wheeler on Thursday night, when Chellaperumal, 64, who was standing by the roadside near Thimmavaram, sought a lift.
Police said they went to a motor pump shed on Chellaperumal’s farmland and consumed liquor. Chellaperumal asked Balaji to drop him at his agricultural land near a railway gate. An argument broke out and the elderly man took a sickle from his shed and repeatedly attacked Balaji on the head before fleeing. Based on a complaint, Chengalpet taluk police registered a case and arrested Chellaperumal. He was remanded in judicial custody.
Hearing Balaji’s cries, people rushed to his rescue and took him to Chengalpet govt hospital.
