Kochi: Cochin University Teachers’ Association (CUTA) has criticised the recent reconstitution of various Boards of Studies (BoS) at Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat), alleging that the appointments could dilute the university’s academic standards.

The association said the recent notifications reconstituted the BoS in statistics, physical and mathematical sciences, and chemical and biological sciences. CUTA said the boards, whose members are appointed for four years, play a key role in framing curricula, determining examination standards and taking other academic decisions. In a statement, the association urged vice-chancellor Junaid Bushiri to reconsiderthe appointments. It alleged that junior faculty members, including assistant professors and associate professors, had been appointed as chairpersons of some boards, while senior professors with long experience in university departments had been made ordinary members. It alleged that excluding experienced professors and eminent academics from other universities and national institutions could affect the quality of academic decisions. The association also alleged that the latest appointments were based on lists submitted by organisations aligned with the administration, rather than academic criteria. Download the TOI App.
Cusat has traditionally constituted its BoS with professors from its own departments, other universities and central institutions, according to CUTA.
The association alleged that teachers from colleges in Kerala and other states had not previously been included in such boards.
