FLOWER PRICES SOAR AT MATTUTHAVANI FLOWER MARKET
Madurai malli (jasmine) touched Rs1,400 per kg, a steep rise from its typical range of Rs 400 to Rs 800, while crossandra price climbed to Rs 1,500 per kg. Pitchi & mullai are selling at Rs 1,000 per kg, arali at Rs 500, sampangi at Rs 200 per kg, and paneer rose at Rs 250 per kg. Murugan , treasurer of Mattuthavani Meenakshi Wholesale Flower Traders Association, said daily jasmine arrivals have dropped to around 3 tonnes, as against the daily supply of nearly 10 tonnes.
Netaji, a farmer from Usilampatti, said unseasonal climatic shifts have damaged flowering and reduced daily harvesting yields by almost half, severely restricting supply right when festive retail buying peaked. Traders and market officials attribute the price surge primarily to a large drop in overall flower arrivals caused by adverse weather in major growing regions.
