The petitioner said applications received from candidates, the reasons for their selection and appointment orders were not uploaded on the department‘s official website despite his representations. Madurai : The Madras high court has suggested that the state government consider amending the relevant rules to ensure transparency in the appointment of non-hereditary trustees to temples by publishing applications, reasons for selection and appointment orders. The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by B Ramkumar Adityan of Tuticorin district, who alleged that the Hindu religious and charitable endowments (HR&CE) department had failed to maintain transparency in such appointments. He sought directions to publish these details on the websites of the HR&CE commissioner and the respective temples. The state submitted that there were no specific rules mandating the publication of these details. A division bench of Justice P Velmurugan and Justice K K Ramakrishnan observed that the issue required the government’s consideration in the interest of transparency and accountability. The judges directed the state to consider the petitioner’s representation and pass orders on its merits and in accordance with law. Download the TOI App.
