The affected areas include Old Bus Stand, Shevapet, Gugai, New Bus Stand, Five Roads, Suramangalam, Alagapuram, Kitchipalayam, Dadagapatti, Saradha College Road and Fairlands. SALEM: Heavy rain lashed several parts of Salem city on Wednesday evening, waterlogging low-lying areas, disrupting traffic and inundating shops.

R Suresh, a Seelanaickenpatti resident, said: “Even rain flooded the stretch. M Revathi, another resident, said: “Repeated flooding made walking unsafe and caused difficulties for schoolchildren.” Seelanaickenpatti Bypass on the Salem-Chennai National Highway was among the worst-affected stretches, with accumulated rainwater hampering motorists and pedestrians. Water entered several commercial establishments, forcing traders to remove goods and take precautions against losses. Vehicles were stranded for nearly an hour as the water level rose quickly. Water stagnation also slowed peak-hour traffic in Kitchipalayam, Gugai, Dadagapatti, Saradha College Road and Fairlands. Motorists cautiously navigated submerged stretches, while civic workers monitored vulnerable locations to prevent congestion. Residents attributed the recurring flooding to inadequate stormwater and underground drainage infrastructure in several neighbourhoods. The situation has remained unchanged for years.
