The petitioner said around 38 families depend entirely on water supply provided within the camp for drinking and domestic requirements, having no independent means of accessing an alternate safe source of water. The petitioner said camp residents continued to consume the said contaminated water for nearly a week, during which more than 40 of them , including children, developed high fever and related symptoms and had to be admitted to he Sivakasi GH for treatment.
He said a borewell meant to supply drinking water was constructed by the contractor at a location between three pre-existing septic tanks on the camp premises, despite objections from residents. Effluents and biological waste from the septic tanks gradually percolated into and mixed with the groundwater drawn by the said borewell, rendering the water supplied to the camp unfit for consumption, he said. Justice C Saravanan passed the order and disposed of the petition filed by T Nathan residing at the Sri Lankan Tamil rehabilitation camp in Sivakasi .
Madurai: Madras high court on Tuesday directed the Virudhunagar district collector to consider and pass orders on the representation made by a Sri Lankan Tamil refugee seeking compensation for the death of his daughter allegedly after drinking contaminated water in their rehabilitation camp in Virudhunagar district.
He stated that his daughter N Nijaisthana, 11, fell seriously ill in a similar manner.
