Following a TOI report about a dailt woman sanitary worker’s attempt to end her life alleging practice of two-tumbler system by the panchayat secretary of Kambur village in Madurai district, the block development officer dismissed the secretary from service on Monday.
Because of her caste, she was forced to use separate disposable cups at work instead of silver cups and made to carry the panchayat secretary’s footwear by hand.
Sasikala, panchayat secretary Roopa, who belongs to the kallar community, have been subjecting dalit sanitation workers to discriminatory treatment, according to the dalit woman. She is undergoing treatment at Melur government hospital. Kottampatti police have booked Roopa under various sections of BNS dealing with obscene acts and criminal intimidation, along with relevant provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Sasikala attempted suicide by consuming pesticide on Sunday.
Social justice minister Vanni Arasu, in his official X handle, posted the TOI report’s clipping and the order passed dismissing panchayat secretary Roopa.
