Kerala HC flags systemic lapses in road safety measures

Kochi : The Kerala high court on Thursday flagged several systemic lapses in road safety measures in the wake of the recent Mini Cooper crash at Nedumbassery in Ernakulam and called for expediting measures suggested earlier, including the creation of a technology-driven integrated road safety monitoring platform to enable real-time monitoring of road safety issues and better coordination among agencies.

“If a particular vehicle is being driven at 150 kmph, will you have spotted it and intimated some authority? …The boy was riding the car at 200 kmph and your AI camera has spotted it. The court also said that supercars routinely took to the roads in Ernakulam after midnight and were driven at speeds of 150 kmph, adding that the drivers appeared to be in high spirits. “If a vehicle is travelling at 100 kmph, even if the driver wants to stop and applies the brakes, it will take a few seconds. The vehicle will then have to travel a minimum of 120 metres before it comes to a stop,” the bench said. The court subsequently adjourned the matter to Nov 3 for responses from the stakeholders, including the state govt.

It also directed the agency to place on record details of overspeeding cases reported over the past two months.

There should be some method by which you should stop it…” the court said. Regarding AI traffic cameras, the court asked counsel for Keltron, the agency implementing the project, whether the agency had informed the authorities about such instances.
