Thrissur : Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has registered a suo motu case in connection with the suicide of a youth from Eriyad, near Kodungallur, in the district.
He said police subjected his son to severe physical and mental harassment, contributing to the suicide. Aslam was a minor when the alleged offence took place but was an adult when police initiated action against him, police said. If the reports establish that the deceased had attained the age of majority, we will take appropriate legal action,” said commission member Jalajamol T C, in response to queries from TOI . The case was registered allegedly based on the girl’s family’s complaint, Naushad said. When Sahal witnessed the police assaulting Aslam, he confessed to the alleged offence in an attempt to spare his younger brother from further torture, Naushad said. Sahal is now in judicial custody, said his father.
The move follows serious allegations by the deceased’s father, Naushad Pazhupparambil, an Eriyad native, against Kodungallur Police over the circumstances leading to his son Aslam’s death. Naushad alleged that Aslam was taken into custody after being falsely implicated in a case linked to a relationship with a girl from Kodungallur. “We have sought reports from the district police chief and district child protection officer on the allegations. He alleged that Aslam’s elder brother, Sahal, was also summoned to the police station. Police subsequently named Sahal too as an accused in the case. Police, however, maintain that the case was registered based on evidence, including digital evidence, indicating that the young woman was allegedly blackmailed and money was extorted from her.
In a social media post, the girl’s sister said the family possessed sufficient evidence to substantiate the complaint and would produce it before the court. She said she was prepared to go to any lengths to secure justice. The girl’s family has accused the brothers of blackmailing her and extorting money and gold.
