Kochi : CMRL managing director Sasidharan Kartha had reportedly submitted a retraction affidavit to enforcement directorate (ED) in 2024 in connection with statements recorded in the Exalogic-CMRL monthly payoff case.

CMRL’s former chief financial officer P Suresh Kumar and chief general manager K S Suresh Kumar, too, had reportedly submitted similar retraction affidavits to ED in 2024, according to sources. ED had recorded Kartha’s statement at his residence on April 17, 2024. It is alleged that Kartha admitted to transferring funds to vendors and withdrawing cash without genuine expenses in a statement recorded under Section 50 of PMLA. Sources said that Kartha’s brother N Ajith sent an email to CMRL on May 15, 2024, in which he alleged that ED officials forcefully recorded his brother’s statements. It added that he had submitted a retraction affidavit, on behalf of Kartha, to ED director on May 15, 2024.

Kartha is also alleged to have admitted to making payments to Veena T and Exalogic Solutions Pvt Ltd, citing personal relationships with then chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan , despite them not rendering any services. The central agency had recently handed over a letter to the state police chief seeking registration of an FIR against Vijayan, his daughter Veena and son-in-law P A Mohamed Riyas in connection with the case. ED, however, has rejected the allegations and maintains that retractions by persons whose statements have been recorded under PMLA act are a usual strategy in such cases. Download the TOI App.
