Kochi : The Muvattupuzha municipality on Tuesday identified those responsible for dumping waste

Kochi : The Muvattupuzha municipality on Tuesday identified those responsible for dumping waste near Homeo Hospital within the civic body limits and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000.

The municipality will initiate legal action against the building owner for failing to provide facilities for proper waste management at the premises,” said municipality chairperson Joice Mary Antony. Following the incident, the opposition councillors raised demands for immediate action against littering and said public littering was recurring within the municipality. “There have been several complaints from residents, which the opposition councilors have been taking up during the councils,” said Majeed Mangatt, opposition councillor.

Following reports of waste dumping in the region, the municipality found that migrant workers residing at Surya Complex near the municipal market were responsible. Officials traced a phone number found on a hospital document recovered from the waste pile to identify those involved. “The sack contained unsegregated and decomposed waste, including food waste.

The lack of functional CCTV cameras has led to an increase in waste dumping, according to Mangatt. “The municipality also does not have adequate facilities for systematic treating of waste within the civic body,” said Mangatt. However, Antony said strict action would continue against dumping waste in public places, with no compromise on enforcement.
