Kochi : The Swap Shop launched by Mulanthuruthy grama panchayat with the aim of creating a waste-free society was inaugurated by panchayat president Lijo George on Sunday.
The district administration launched a revolve campaign run by Kudumbashree units early this month to reuse the discarded or used items.
The panchayat authorities said the local body aims to take forward this initiative, which is a step towards the goal of a waste-free Navakeralam, with public participation, and that the public should come forward to hand over usable items lying unused in houses and institutions in a manner that benefits others. Numerous items that have suffered minor damage and are unused, piling up in houses or discarded as waste, can be donated. An item that is not needed by one person may be useful to another. The eco-friendly initiative creates an opportunity to exchange such items and find new users for them. The main aim of the initiative is to reduce the excessive exploitation of natural resources through the reuse of items and to control the quantity of waste. People can deposit the items they used and take the reusable ones deposited by others.
